GMID Water Leadership
Our strong social-media campaign to demand a fair flow of water for farmers under the Murray Darling Basin Plan was heard across the region and all the way to decision-makers in Melbourne and Canberra.
The Goulburn Murray Irrigation District (GMID) Water Leadership was formed in late 2015 by a group of leaders in horticulture, dairy and cropping, food processing, local government, environmental management and politics to be a strong voice for water security.
Its focus has been on ensuring the rollout of the Murray Darling Basin Plan ensures the health of our river systems while not penalising regional communities who rely on water to grow Australia’s clean, green and highly sought-after agricultural produce.
In May 2018, we launched our #fairflow campaign to call for a true triple-bottom-line outcome for the Plan – that means a fair result for our environment, our regional economies and our irrigation communities.
Our advocacy has been successful in ensuring no additional water is removed from food production in Victoria either through buyback programs or through farmers trading their water for on-farm upgrades and that a suite of important projects proceed to achieve equivalent environmental outcomes.
