Agriculture, Environment & Water
Shepparton District and the broader Goulburn Valley ’is often described as the “food bowl of the nation
We are a powerhouse of irrigated dairy and horticulture and a major centre for food-processing. We are also one of the sunniest spots in Victoria and ideally situated to support the development of solar energy and reduce our reliance on traditional power sources.
However, we are vulnerable to extended dry periods and the recent drought had a tangible impact in our own community. We have lost hundreds of our dairy farming families due to the high cost of water. Water policy continues to be an area of concern for farmers and others in the agricultural industry across our region.
In the past five years, we have been fighting to ensure no further loss of water from our region’s irrigated farmland. There is still much more to do to ensure that no further water leaves our consumptive pool in northern Victoria.
As co-chair of the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District I have fought hard to fix the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. Farming families have been desperate to be heard and I will continue to fight for fairer water policy, not just another series of reviews.
I will continue to:
- Stand up for our farmers’ access to irrigation water and ensure a thriving and innovative regional economy.
- Advocate to prevent further socio-economic hardship on our community as a result of the Murray Darling Basin Plan.
- Support increasing our renewable energy industries while preserving our prime agricultural land for irrigated farming.
