Grahamvale residents deserving of safer roads

March 29, 2018/in Media Releases

Independent Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed says the safety of drivers using Grahamvale Rd must be a priority for the Victorian Government.

Ms Sheed said several intersections along the Shepparton Alternate Road had been serious danger hot-spots for too long and has called on the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Luke Donnellan, to outline what steps the Government was taking to improve safety.

Ms Sheed said the intersections of Grahamvale Rd with Knights Rd and Ford Rd were particularly problematic, with passenger vehicles navigating large trucks travelling at high speed.

“This has been an issue for a long time and it should not be left unaddressed any longer,” Ms Sheed said.

“We’re talking about a narrow road, bordered on one side by railway tracks and on the other by an irrigation channel. We’re sending B-Double trucks along there as part of the Shepparton Alternate Route, but there’s simply not enough room for cars and trucks to coexist safely.

“Constituents have been raising their concerns about the intersections along this stretch of road for decades, my National Party predecessors have spoken of it in Parliament as long ago as 1994, yet little has been done.”

Ms Sheed said while she welcomed the Government’s interest in investing in road upgrades, she said current proposals would not fix the extent of issues on Grahamvale Rd.

“There’s a proposal for a roundabout at Ford Rd which would do wonders for that intersection, but those works won’t improve the safety at Knights Rd or Northey Rd, nor safeguard drivers from the existing risk while we wait for construction to begin,” Ms Sheed said.

“I strongly believe we need an interim measure to ensure the people of Shepparton District can travel safely to and from their homes.”

Ms Sheed said she urged the community to participate in the public consultation on the proposed upgrades to ensure their views were heard.

Minister Donnellan has 28 days to respond to Ms Sheed’s constituency question.

Sheed welcomes fast-tracked train service

March 21, 2018/in Media Releases

Independent Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed says the fast-tracking of $43.5m of works for the Shepparton train line is a win for the power of strong community advocacy.

Ms Sheed said today’s announcement by Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan meant Shepparton District would have access to a fifth train service to the region next year, instead of having to wait until 2020.

“In May last year I asked Minister Allan to bring forward important upgrades to ensure the region was on track for the better and more frequent train service it deserves,” Ms Sheed said.

“I’m so pleased to hear today that the Minister has fast-tracked the $43.5m of works to upgrade Shepparton’s stabling facilities and extend a vital passing loop by a full year.

“Hundreds of millions of dollars are still required to upgrade the tracks to allow VLocity-type trains to run between Shepparton and Seymour, but this first tranche of works means we’re another step closer to our goal of eight daily services in under two hours.”

Ms Sheed said the announcement was recognition of the sustained advocacy of the people of Shepparton District.

“For years this region was overlooked by the major political parties who ignored the voices in this community calling for change,” Ms Sheed said.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done, but with nine new weekly train services introduced in the past three years and this work having been brought forward, we’re now seeing the results of our hard work.”

Sheed announces candidacy for Shepparton District

March 7, 2018/in Media Releases

Independent Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed has announced she will recontest the seat at this year’s Victorian election.

Ms Sheed, who was elected to the Victorian Parliament in 2014 on a platform of transport, health and education, said she had unfinished business and looked forward to continuing to represent the needs of the Shepparton District community.

“After so many decades of being ignored by consecutive governments, Shepparton District is finally getting the attention it deserves,” Ms Sheed said.

“Momentum is building. We’re seeing progress on rail, the first stage of our hospital redevelopment is underway, we have the Government’s support for a fundamental transformation of our secondary school system and the community’s concerns about farmers’ access to water under the Murray Darling Basin Plan are being heard by key decision-makers.

“It has been a fantastic first term in Parliament, so much has been achieved, but there is so much more to be done.”

Ms Sheed said more funding for track works and new rolling stock for the Shepparton train line would be her number one priority in the lead up to the November election.

“Hundreds of millions of dollars is required to upgrade the tracks between Shepparton and Seymour to allow VLocity-type trains to travel on them and I want to see that happen,” Ms Sheed said.

“Improved connectivity is vital to our region’s prosperity and I strongly believe that message is finally cutting through.

“I also want to see a commitment to the second stage of Goulburn Valley Health, including a cancer centre and a mother-baby unit, and funding for the full rollout of the Shepparton Education Plan to give our young people the best start to life we can.”

Ms Sheed said it was an honour to represent the people of Shepparton District.

“It is such a privilege to travel throughout the electorate and meet so many wonderful people who are passionate about our community,” Ms Sheed said.

“The support I have received in this role from the community, my staff, and of course my husband, Dr Peter Eastaugh, has been invaluable and I look forward to continuing to work together to achieve the outcomes this region deserves.”

Friendship Cafe brings community closer together

March 4, 2018/in Media Releases

Independent Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed says a series of Friendship Cafes run by the local ethnic council will have a positive impact on the community.

Ms Sheed hosted a Friendship Café for about 20 young women from the region’s diverse multicultural communities at The Vault on Wednesday.

She and guest speaker Seema Abdullah, Deputy Mayor of Greater Shepparton City Council, spoke to the group about their roles in state and local government, their community involvement and their leadership journeys over morning tea.

They also held round-table discussions with the young women about their own lives, experiences and aspirations.

“It was such an amazing experience to hear the stories of these young women from places such as Malaysia, Afghanistan, Syria, the Philippines, Vietnam and Sudan,” Ms Sheed said.

“Some of them have been here for years and others have arrived as recently as two months ago, but all of them showed such great enthusiasm for their schooling and exciting visions for their futures.

Ms Sheed said the Friendship Cafes were an excellent opportunity to help more newly arrived residents in the region feel included in the community.

“These young women have so much to offer our community, but often they lack access to the resources needed to really excel because of language and cultural barriers,” Ms Sheed said.

“It is one of the joys of being a Member of Parliament that I have the opportunity to engage with young women such as these and share with them my own unexpected journey in the hope they will realise they can do anything they put their mind to.”

MDBA profiles show farming communities hit hard

March 2, 2018/in Media Releases

Independent Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed says the collection of community profiles released last week by the Murray Darling Basin Authority shows a drastic loss of employment in the Southern Basin’s irrigation-dependent communities.

The data tracks population and employment figures in irrigation-dependent communities from 2001 to 2016, a 15-year period covering the Millennium Drought, the Commonwealth buyback of farmers’ water entitlements and the further reduction of available water associated with the implementation of the Murray Darling Basin Plan.

Ms Sheed said the irrigation workforce in Shepparton slumped 24.3 per cent between 2001 and 2011, and a further 17.3 per cent between 2011 and 2016.

“After the Millennium Drought ended, you would have expected to see some recovery in job numbers as production returned to some sort of normal level,” Ms Sheed said.

“Instead, jobs have continued to bleed away from the sector since the Murray Darling Basin Plan came into effect.

“Certainly broader challenges affecting industries such as dairy have played a role, but the link between reduced water availability as a result of the Plan and reduced employment in irrigated farming cannot be overlooked.”

Ms Sheed said she welcomed recent comments by Murray Darling Basin Authority chief Phillip Glyde acknowledging that Basin communities understand the full impact of water recovery in their towns better than anyone.

“This data is only based on high level population and employment information from recent censuses and ABS records and so it cannot capture the lived reality in our communities,” Ms Sheed said.

“It does not reflect the increasingly precarious position of our farmers, the level of debt some are in and their shrinking capacity to protect themselves against the challenges of further water reduction.

“Most critically, it does not reflect the despair of some farmers still in the game who are now feeling they’re being forced out of an industry they love – an industry central to Australians being able to enjoy continued access to high quality fresh food – because their access to water has been so severely hindered.

“Our community has been very vocal about the serious social and economic impact it’s experiencing and our well-founded fears about the effect of further water recovery, so I look forward to seeing those views well reflected in future MDBA analysis.”
