All Aboard Shepparton demand better timetabling and more services

June 10, 2015/in Media Releases

All Aboard Shepparton are calling on the Andrews Labor Government to change the Shepparton Rail Passenger Service timetable and invest in extra services immediately.

State Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed, Greater Shepparton City Council, the Committee for Greater Shepparton and the SheppartonRAILS group want the government to change the timetable to allow for more frequent, convenient and direct services to and from the city.

Their recommendations include adding a new 6.40pm service from Shepparton to Melbourne, to allow business travellers to return to Melbourne.

“These changes can be easily implemented by V/Line and would make an immediate impact on our community,” Ms Sheed said.

“At the moment if you want to go to Melbourne after work you have to catch the 4.06pm service, which is not possible for most working people.

“We’re calling on the government to make these changes and invest in these extra services for our district now; we’ve suffered an infrequent, inconvenient and slow passenger rail service for far too long.”

All Aboard Shepparton is also calling on the government to immediately:

  • Invest in infrastructure at Murchison to enable trains to safely pass.
  • Invest in stabling and security works at Shepparton Station to allow for the dewatering of trains.
  • Employ a Protective Services Officer at Seymour Station.

All Aboard Shepparton has seen what investment in rail infrastructure has meant for Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong and Traralgon and want a feasibility study to consider:

  • A VLocity train with three carriages
  • Rail track upgrades (improve from 90km to 160km standard)
  • Level crossing upgrades
  • Increase future train services in line with demand and population growth of the Goulburn Valley.

Shepparton and district residents can share what an improved rail service would mean to them and their families at the All Aboard SheppartonFacebook page and on Twitter using the #allaboardshepparton.

“We’re asking the community to get involved in this campaign and tell the government how important more frequent and more convenient rail services are to them,” Ms Sheed said.

The All Aboard Shepparton campaign train will depart Shepparton May 28 at 6.31am.

“I want as many people as possible to join us on the train to Melbourne to show the Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan how important this is to Shepparton District residents,” Ms Sheed said.

The group will gather on the steps of Parliament House, before representatives meet with the Minister.

Health Minister to Visit Shepparton

June 10, 2015/in Media Releases

Health Minister Jill Hennessy will visit Goulburn Valley Health following an invitation from the Independent Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed.

Ms Sheed used her adjournment debate in parliament this week to draw the Health Minister’s attention to the plight of Goulburn Valley Health.

"This health facility has suffered from underinvestment for too long and is now struggling to cope," Ms Sheed said.

"We need urgent funding in the forthcoming budget for the preparatory stages of a new development and a commitment to funding a development more suited to the Shepparton district’s needs today and into the future."

Ms Sheed urged the Minister to visit Shepparton to see first-hand "the need for that investment".

The Minister for Health said she was aware of the problems facing Goulburn Valley Health.

"I understand that Goulburn Valley Health is facing quite demanding growth pressures in terms of servicing the community," she said.

"I intend to visit Goulburn Valley Health in March, and I look forward to gaining a more direct understanding of some of the pressures it is under."

The Minister for Health said she was not in a position to make budget announcements at this stage.

"But I commend the member for her advocacy on behalf of her local community."

Ms Sheed said she looked forward to welcoming the Health Minister to Shepparton next month.

Member for Shepparton District urges consumers to buy local

June 10, 2015/in Media Releases

Independent Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed has urged consumers to buy local to ensure their safety in the wake of this month’s imported berry scare.

"I am so concerned that our supermarket shelves are full of products coming from countries that are not subject to the same standards that we impose on our own growers and processers," Ms Sheed said.

"Even with some increased testing by the Food Standards Australia New Zealand consumers are still at risk.

"At this point in time consumers can only have confidence in buying clean, green, local produce."

Ms Sheed’s comments come after the federal Health Department yesterday confirmed 18 Australians have now been diagnosed with hepatitis A, which has been linked to eating contaminated frozen berries imported from China.

The Federal Department of Agriculture has placed a holding order on frozen berries from the two Chinese factories linked to the hepatitis A outbreak but the holding order does not apply to other Chinese frozen berries, or to frozen berries from any other country.

"This is a serious and widening outbreak, how can we be sure that other Chinese frozen fruit and vegetables are safe?" she said.

"We can’t. The only way to guarantee your families wellbeing is to buy local."

The hepatitis A outbreak comes after heavy metal contamination was found in Chinese canned peaches tested late last year.

Ms Sheed used her first question in State Parliament today to highlight the issue and urge the Andrews Labor Government to buy locally grown and manufactured food in all government food procurement.

"It is essential the State Government supports Victorian growers and manufacturers, and I implore them to buy local, especially given the high levels of uncertainty surrounding the safety of some imported food products."
